About Mount Whaleback
One of the largest single open-pit iron ore mines in the world. The hill once rose 805 m and has been almost entirely carved away. First ore shipped in 1969 after a railway was pushed to the coast. Explorers named it for its resemblance to a whale. Part of the gigantic Pilbara iron province. The pit is about 5.5 km long.
