About Mesabi Range

The iron range that built American steel. Mined since 1890 with both underground and open pit methods. Supplied most of the iron ore for the United States in both World Wars. At its peak it produced about 70 percent of national iron ore. The pits stretch for miles across northern Minnesota. The town of Hibbing sits beside rich ore bodies.
