The largest gold mine in South America. Opened in 1993 on high Andean plateau above Cajamarca, Peru. Has produced more than 30 million ounces of gold. Heap leach pads the size of small towns process low grade ore. Protests over water helped cancel the nearby Conga project. Majority owned by Newmont.
