About Weipa Mine
One of the largest bauxite mines in the world. Located on Cape York in far north Queensland. The ore lies almost at the surface beneath thin soil. Mining began in 1961. Bauxite from here feeds aluminum smelters worldwide. Operated by Rio Tinto under agreements with traditional owners.
