About Muruntau Mine
One of the largest gold mines on Earth by output. The open pit in the Kyzylkum Desert is about 3.5 km long and 600 m deep. Discovered in 1958 by Soviet geologists, with mining starting in 1967. Produces more gold than any other single mine, roughly 2 million ounces per year. Operated by the state company Navoi Mining.
