About Los Pelambres
A giant open-pit copper mine high in the Andes. First production came in 1999. Ore travels by pipeline to a port on the coast. Located near glaciers, the mine runs careful ice monitoring programs. Produces several hundred thousand tonnes of copper per year. Workers commute from the coast over a high mountain pass.
