About Lihir Mine
A giant gold mine inside the crater of an extinct volcano. Located on a remote island in Papua New Guinea. Production began in 1997. Geothermal steam from the volcano supplies part of the power. The pit will eventually reach below sea level. Treats refractory ore with pressure oxidation.
