About Garzweiler Mine

A colossal lignite mine in western Germany. Over a dozen villages have been demolished or relocated for the coal. Some residents fought eviction for decades. The village of Lutzerath was cleared in 2023 amid mass protests. The mine destroys farms, churches, and forests ahead of the excavators. Scheduled to close in the 2030s under German coal exit law.
