About Cerrejon Mine
The largest coal mine in Latin America. Located on the arid La Guajira peninsula near the Caribbean. Opened in 1980. A 150 km railway carries coal to a dedicated export port. Produces tens of millions of tonnes of thermal coal per year. Longstanding disputes with indigenous Wayuu communities over water and land persist.
